R1 Impact – Whaley Children’s Center

May 12, 2014

On Monday, a team of Reliance One employees volunteered their time with the Whaley Children’s Center in Flint, MI. During the day they helped out by unloading and sorting many of the donations the center had received from their last fundraiser. They also assisted in yard cleanup for one of the properties the Children’s Center owns. A large windstorm had recently passed through causing many branches to be scattered throughout the property, so the extra sets of hands for clean-up were greatly appreciated.

The team said they were able to tour the facility and meet with several of the children, which had a pretty big impact on them. “After spending the day helping out and meeting the children, I really saw how important the center is to the community and how volunteering my time really can make a difference in someone’s life,” said Norm Riopelle, Technical Recruiter at Reliance One.

They also said it was nice to be able to serve a place that does so much for children who severely need it, and they really look forward to the opportunity to go back! “This experience opened my eyes to the great services Whaley Children’s Center provides to the youth in need of the Flint area,” said Riopelle.

Forgotten Harvest – R1 Impact Through Serving Others

April 29, 2014

This past Friday, a team from Reliance One spent their R1 Impact Day at Forgotten Harvest of Southeast Detroit. They assisted the farm personnel with clean up in the barns in order to get them ready for the upcoming season. In the first barn, they removed straw so they could start relocating dirt to the lower areas of the barn, while also disposing of large piles of trash. In the second barn, Robin, Joe, and Jake focused on leaf removal while Ericka sorted gloves for future volunteers.

The team said Forgotten Harvest was very thankful they were able to get some of these larger tasks off of their list, since they usually get pushed aside when the weather gets nicer, which is when their focus turns to planting and harvesting.

“While we sit down at our tables each and every day to enjoy a meal, we don’t realize that one out of every five people in Southeast Michigan goes without. This farm has a goal of delivering 1.7 million pounds of food to the tables of those in need. Knowing that we had a small part in that eventual success was a great feeling,” stated Robin Hilliker, R1 Account Manager.

About Forgotten Harvest:

http://www.forgottenharvest.org/

The mission of Forgotten Harvest, founded in 1990, is to relieve hunger in the Detroit metropolitan community by rescuing extra, prepared and perishable food and donating it to emergency food providers. This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to 280 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area.

Focus Hope – R1 Impact Through Serving Others

March 25, 2014

Last Thursday, the Leadership team at Reliance One volunteered their time with Focus Hope. The team was responsible for handing out food to those that visited the distribution center. This required communication with the Focus Hope team to ensure the supplies were fully stocked. Most R1 members stated that this was the highlight of their day – the customer service focus was easily translated from the daily tasks performed at Reliance One. “I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the individuals that walked through the doors at Focus Hope. Most of the people there were extremely friendly and grateful for my assistance. It was a great reminder of how much of an impact that a smile has,” said Rob Wicker, Director of Recruitment. “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around,” (Leo Buscaglia).

In addition, the R1 team was tasked with prepping palettes of juice and various canned goods. This activity was very physically demanding because the heavy items had to be moved and stacked in another area. The R1 team learned that following a pattern on the palette could prove to be challenging. Rob stepped in while stacking to ensure that the second palate was done correctly. Most people agreed that the physical demands were far beyond their regular work duties in the office.

“This was one of my best days! I was really impacted by many people who I met throughout the day. It makes you appreciate an organization like Focus Hope and what they do for the community. I am already looking forward to coming back and giving to those that could use the help,” said VP of Reliance One, Jeff Gardner.

About Focus Hope:

http://www.focushope.edu/

The mission of Focus: HOPE, founded in 1968, is “recognizing the dignity and beauty of every person, we pledge intelligent and practical action to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice. And to build a metropolitan community where all people may live in freedom, harmony, trust and affection. Black and white, yellow, brown and red from Detroit and its suburbs of every economic status, national origin and religious persuasion we join in this covenant.”
