How to Handle an Unexpected Career Change

You get the surprising news about a job ending due to unforeseen circumstances, now what? For those who have gone through this it can be scary and stressful. How you respond to this change will have a major impact on how soon you find yourself a new opportunity.

Even the best, most talented people can find themselves in a situation where they need to find another company or job. You must believe that there is a silver lining and a great opportunity out there for you; it’s up to you to go find it.

One of the first things you need to do is get organized. Invest some time in getting your resume updated, notify your references and get them documented, and do some research on possible companies and opportunities that you would be passionate about. Consider meeting with a professional recruiter to gain insight on industry trends and market availability. You also need to make sure that you are dressing and looking your best for upcoming professional interviews, as first impressions are important.

Once you are organized, it’s time to put yourself out there. Let your network know that you are searching for new opportunities, put your resume out on job banks and actively research jobs and companies that interest you. When you find something you’re interested in, apply for the opportunity and then try and network with some of the people that are already working within the company. This shows interest, initiative and will help to separate yourself from the others that applied.

Don’t jump at the first opportunity you’re offered unless you know it’s the right one for you. Find an opportunity that meets the most important things you are looking for in both a company and career. Remember – you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you.

Lastly, believe in yourself and your abilities. If you don’t, how do expect someone else to?  Most hiring managers are looking for two things when considering a new team member: Can they do the job (aptitude) and do they fit into the culture (attitude)?

I often tell job searchers that there is no better time than now to be looking for a new opportunity as most companies are struggling to find good, qualified candidates to fill their job openings. Increase your odds of finding the right position for you by taking the time to prepare for the process. If you find yourself needing some extra help and support, reach out to one of our recruiters and let us be a partner in in finding your next opportunity.

The Fruits of Labor

July 31, 2014

A team from Reliance One recently spent a day at the Forgotten Harvest of Southeast Detroit. Matt, Ognen, Jen, and Max spent the day picking summer squash that was eventually distributed to families in the Detroit area. The task was daunting as there were eight rows of squash that stretched over a half mile long. The team pulled together to pick the squash off the vines, as well as pull up the plants so that the fields could be reseeded the following day.

“Volunteering was a great way to bring our team closer together while also impacting others. It was fun, but it was also hard work. It really made us appreciate the people that are out there every day making a difference in other’s lives,” said Matt Van Norman, Account Manager at Reliance One. The team said that working on the farm was without a doubt physically taxing; however, the optimism of the entire volunteer group made for an enjoyable day of service.

About Forgotten Harvest:

The mission of Forgotten Harvest, founded in 1990, is to relieve hunger in the Detroit metropolitan community by rescuing extra, prepared and perishable food and donating it to emergency food providers. This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to 280 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area.

R1 Impact – Building Healthy Teams

February 5, 2014

Along with the release of our volunteer program, Reliance One introduced the launch of our wellness program; “R1 Impact – Building Healthy Teams.” As a company, we strive to provide our employees with the tools to live healthier lifestyles, and hopefully they enjoy some fun along the way!

The wellness program will include healthy snacks provided by Reliance One weekly and healthy options in our new vending machines, which will be run by the VP, Jim Paquette’s sons. Additionally, our employees will earn “Wellness Tickets” for using our in-office gym (free of charge), visiting the doctor / dentist for check-ups, receiving the flu shot, etc. We’re also excited for the opportunity to offer monthly yoga or boot camp classes here at our headquarters. “I’m confident the introduction of these new programs will create even more energy and excitement within our company and will put us on the top workplaces list for the Detroit area four years in a row,” stated Sr. Recruiter, Alicia Bradley.

2014 is a promising year for Reliance One, and we hope to inspire our employees to lead a healthier lifestyle. We’re confident our new wellness program will make those decisions to be healthy a little bit easier!

R1 Impact – Through Serving Others

February 4, 2014

Reliance One is introducing an exciting new initiative that will focus on their volunteering and charity programs; “R1 Impact Through Serving Others.” The committee members have put together a program that will benefit both the community and employees. “As a company, we are committed to being involved in the communities with which we do business,” said Jim Beath, President of Reliance One.

The company will continue to support organizations such as; The Rainbow Connection, The Ronald McDonald House and local families through the Adopt a Family program that helps bring joy around the holidays. In addition, the company introduced “The Reliance One Day of Service Program.” Throughout the year, co-workers will join together as teams and devote days of volunteering to organizations in Southeast Michigan. “It is important to me that each and every team member knows how important it to give back to the community. This not only will help with some great causes, but help grow and develop our employees,” said Beath.

Reliance One will be coordinating fundraisers to help support these organizations throughout the year. Our company volunteer efforts and donations will be continuously updated on the R1 website.
