Taking the Lead with Change

Reliance One and its leaders take great pride in their ability to adapt to change. “We have to adapt and overcome, that’s all we can do” (Frank Knight). Since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was set into motion, Kristen Latimer, Administrative Services Manager, has committed a large part of her time to compliance, education, and strategic planning. She has spent numerous days at seminars collecting information and networking with experts to ensure that Reliance One stays one step ahead of future plans.

As a result of Kristen’s knowledge bank, in addition to her passion for education, she was asked to participate as a panel member in the 5th Annual HR Summit held at Walsh College on, Thursday, March 6, 2014. The purpose of panel was for Human Resources professionals to offer an interactive conversation on how each company was approaching compliance. “Reliance One is doing everything in its power to offer functional and affordable benefits to its workforce. I take great pride in working for a company that is committed to doing the right thing; our employees are our greatest asset,” said Kristen. Reliance One was thrilled to be included in the discussion and the company plans to keep ACA compliance at the top of their agenda. Both Kristen and the leaders at Reliance One fully understand that tall order that must be filled by 2015.

Leadership as Defined by Katie Ackert

katieAuburn Hills, MI., Dec. 16, 2013

Katie Ackert may be short in stature but, her impact to Reliance One and the Auburn Hills community has been remarkable. As a “Rookie” in the staffing industry, Katie has taken the lead with the Auburn Hills Chamber of Commerce to successfully grow her business. She is known within the company for her determination and her uncanny ability to develop new business. In 2013, Katie was able to establish partnerships with 13 new clients; she has set the tone for other managers who are eager to follow in her footsteps. When asked about her success, Katie said, “I am honored to be named as the 2013 Ambassador of the Year. I have put in a lot of time to help both the Chamber and Reliance One and it has brought me a lot of personal success.”

In addition to being named for the Auburn Hills Award, Reliance One presented Kate with their “Visionary Award” over the weekend. This is a very prestigious award that is given to those that exemplify what it takes to be a leader at Reliance One. In just two short years, Katie launched herself from an entry level position to a manager that is leading in the company as well as their community. It is an honor to have Katie on the Reliance One team and we look forward to watching her grow in the years to come.

Strategic Alliance’s Fuel Growth

November 8, 2013

Auburn Hills, Mich. – Reliance One, a minority owned staffing and recruiting firm, was just ranked as the 9th largest (2012 Revenue) Hispanic-Owned Businesses in Metro Detroit by Crain’s Detroit Business.

Reliance One relocated its headquarters to Auburn Hills in March of 2012. “We purchased a 22,000 square-foot building in Auburn Hills and created it into a state of the art recruiting center for our clients and employees. The building is designed with the latest technologies and the layout is perfect for what we do – putting people to work,” said Jim Beath, President of Reliance One.

The first year in our new location, we grew 18% and Reliance One is on pace to more than double that growth in 2013. Fueling this growth is strategic alliances with clients that have come to depend on Reliance One to solve their staffing challenges. “Our services have never been more in demand then they are right now. Companies are struggling to find the talent they need to meet their resource demands,” said Beath.

Another key reason we are growing is due to our continued participation with the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “This partnership provides numerous networking opportunities with business leaders that embrace diversity and inclusion in the workplace” said Beath. These networking opportunities are both local and national. “Working with Reliance One, you immediately feel a strong sense of reliability, friendship and confidence, knowing they are looking out for your best interest. Reliance One has a distinctive passion about their business and how they work with customers,” said Camilo Suero, Executive Director of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

6 Quick Tips for Transforming a Summer Job Into a Full-Time Gig

If you took a summer job to make a little extra cash but figured once fall began you’d be done with it, consider this: That summer job just might be your ticket to full-time work. Employers take less risk in hiring you for the summer, but can see how reliable you are for more permanent roles. You’ve already learned the ropes at your company, and it’s easier to keep an employee than to train another.

If your summer job is one you’d like to have year-round, here are some tips to ensure you’re the best candidate for that permanent position.

1. Start with a company you like. If you’re handing out prizes to kids at a theme park, but you want to work at a newspaper, this might not be the job you want to make permanent. Instead, aim for part-time summer work at a company you’d ideally love to work for full-time. Even if you’re unable to get the job of your dreams for the summer, you’ve at least got your foot in the door to be considered for that role down the road.

Everyone starts at the bottom. So while you may not be qualified as a senior writer, do apply for an intern or junior writer position, for example.

2. Prove yourself. Many college kids don’t take summer jobs seriously, so it’s fairly easy to stand out in this regard. Show up on time. Do your job well. Ask for additional responsibilities. Talk to your boss about what it would take to stay on past the summer—and do so early so you have the chance to meet (or exceed) his or her expectations.

3. Find out what jobs are available. If you dream of becoming a chef, you might not be ready at the end of the summer to run a kitchen. But a line cook or some other kitchen role might be a good stepping stone. Realize that it might take a few months (or years) trying out different roles before you’ve gained enough experience for that dream role.

4. Keep track of your accomplishments. Don’t just do the bare minimum; go beyond. Whether it’s reorganizing the file system, or coming up with a new, more efficient way of doing things, keep a list of your achievements over the summer. Then, when it’s time to pitch your boss on hiring you through the fall, provide the list and maybe throw in some ideas about how you can continue to help the company with your amazing creativity.

5. Make friends. The more people you know at your summer job, the greater your chances of getting a full-time position internally. Don’t brown nose to do so, but do make an effort to network with people in different departments. When it comes time to apply for that full-time role, ask those who know you best for reference letters.

6. Stick with it. A summer job may be just that—a summer job. If it’s a company you really like working for, don’t give up. Make sure your application is at the top of the list for next summer. And with any luck, your persistence will eventually get you that full-time role.

Summer jobs aren’t just a way to make a quick buck in between semesters. They can be great training tools to help you get the career you want, and can help an employer see the benefit in hiring you permanently. Choose your job carefully, and work to prove that you’re a shining star.
