Blocking and Tackling For Meetings

Written By: Rob Wicker, VP of Recruitment and Operations

As many sports team’s head to the practice field to prepare for another season it made me think of how every team starts out – working on the fundamentals.  The planning for a practice is probably more important than the practice itself and the same goes for a well-run meeting.  When planning a meeting make sure you consider the following best practices:

  1. Define what you are trying to get out of the meeting (or if you need to even have a meeting).
  2. Make sure you have a detailed agenda.
  3. Organize your presentations and handouts to compliment what you are attempting to accomplish.
  4. Only invite people that will participate in the meeting.
  5. Wrap up your meeting with next steps and clear expectations.

Just like a great head coach, it is important to have a detailed game plan for a successful outcome.  Put these best practices into your routine and watch the productivity and wins add up!

Think Like A Coach

By: James Paquette – Co-Founder / Owner

Imagine that you have just landed your dream job and you finally feel that you can focus on your career.  You meet the team and the first few weeks fly by. After training you find yourself struggling and request a meeting with the manager. The manager can choose to either coach this person or react in a way that discourages them. This scenario is a common workplace issue that occurs when hiring new talent. Training is critical to the individual’s success – follow up must occur for the entire duration of the team member’s tenure.

In less than one month, Reliance One is dedicating a whole day to Manager Training. In the end, our employees will be focusing on these key attributes of being a good coach. “You don’t win with X’s and O’s. What you win with is people.” Joe Gibbs

  • Be empathetic to those around you
  • Be selfless by putting your team first
  • Be a good communicator
  • Listen to your team for advice – you are not all-knowing
  • Define a realistic career path for your team members

Many people are placed into a management role because they have demonstrated great performance. We must shift that dynamic and help them to become a successful manager by providing them the right coaching and training. People are the foundation of our business and they need to know that we care.

5 Tips on How to Improve Your Resume

Written By: Paulina Gomez, Office Assistant

Writer Marilyn Borysek (from the ASME Career Center) recently wrote, “Hiring managers and recruiters alike say they’ve seen more written resumes cross their desks recently than ever before.” In order to attract more interview offers and to ensure that your resume doesn’t get added to the eliminated pile, Reliance One, has compiled the following five key tips:

  1. Drop the “Objective” and Add a “Career Summary”
    • The general purpose of a “Career Summary” is to explain to the hiring manager(s) who you are, your skills and accomplishments.
    • It is important to spend time developing your summary and making sure it’s catered to the industry you are trying to apply for.

  1. Keep It Simple, but Descriptive
    • Yes, your resume can be more than a page. As you create your resume, each job position should include: Date(s), Company Name, Location, Job Title and Job Responsibilities. Be sure to include as much detail, as you can.
    • Don’t forget to selectively apply bold and italic typeface. In addition, bullets to catch the reader’s attention.

  1. Remember the Basics
    • Remember, your resume makes the first impression. Before submitting your resume make sure it is error-free, grammatically correct and clean.
    • Conservative is key. Make sure to have a logical format, clean font and size, clear headings and appropriate margins.

  1. Always Ask
    • Before submitting your resume, ask an individual to look over your resume to catch any errors, repetitiveness and to help add key words throughout your resume.
    • In addition, make sure to ask if the hiring manager(s) preference pertaining to PDF or Word resumes when submitting. You don’t want the hiring manager(s) unable to download your resume.

  1. Keep It Real
    • Remember, more than one person reads through your resume and checks the validity of the information you provided.
    • To ensure validity on your end, make sure to update your resume consistently with new roles, responsibilities, skills, additional training or certifications.

Keeping these five tips in mind when either updating or creating your resume, will ensure that you are marketable which should lead you to your next interview.

Safety First!

Written By: Katelyn Allinder, Human Resource Assistant

Employers across the nation face the risk of injury every day. Katelyn Allinder has recently spent time taking OSHA Education classes as well as attending Certified Risk Manager (CRM) training in Florida. As a result, she is passing along these tips to aid in injury prevention:

  • Conduct pre-employment screenings/tests: this ensures that the employee designated to do a specific job has the experience and ability to do so.
  • Educate and properly train the employees: continuing to educate employees on the importance of workplace safety can significantly reduce the amount of injuries sustained
  • Provide appropriate personal protective equipment: enforcing the utilization of PPE such as safety goggles, face protection, hard hats, etc. can protect employees from major injuries and reduce the amount of risk they are exposed to.
  • Don’t skip steps: the chance of accidents increases significantly when employees take short cuts and cut corners.
  • Encourage employees to speak up: Getting feedback from employees where they see potential hazards can help the company stay proactive in managing risks.

The Roundtable Effect

Written By: Kristen Latimer, VP of Administration

“Some of my best ideas came from someone else.” Think Tank, Vistage, MichBusiness Thrive Affinity Groups, Roundtable Discussions, etc. These are all groups of individuals that have one common goal – to present an idea, problem, or seek guidance and obtain information, ideas and advice. I took a leap of faith and joined the Thrive Affinity Groups in 2012 after hearing about them at a local conference. Being new to Human Resources as well as a one man show, I felt I could really benefit from other professionals. From sharing policies to unique HR situations, I have grown as a professional and learned an immense amount of valuable information.

I have spent the past 5 years working with professionals from a variety of backgrounds. The vast experience of these individuals as well as their commitment to the group has provided us the opportunity to grow a very trusting relationship. Some of the most challenging cases can be brought forth to try and prevent companies violating laws, losing key employees, or implementing change. The goal is to work together and utilize everyone’s experience to our advantage.

In the last year, I was given the privilege to host and moderate a group of my own. It has been great honor to be trusted with the responsibility of creating an effective agenda that includes meaningful content. It has been said many times that the group meetings are a top priority for members and the meetings are well attended. As always, we must follow the 3 governing rules: Confidential discussions, Commitment to participate, Consistency in attendance. It is amazing how many issues are resolved in just a few hours at each monthly meeting.

If you have found yourself trying to Google your way through an issue, or feeling overwhelmed with a new situation, consider finding a local group that allows roundtable discussions. Online forums are great for traditional HR issues that may present themselves, however, there is something to be said about effective, in person communication and the solutions that arise through a collaborative effort. The Reliance One team gathered to celebrate the wish that they granted to seven-year old, Aaron.

February 1, 2016

Auburn Hills, MI – Reliance One, Inc. was happy to welcome Brenda Moore and Mary Grace McCarter from the Rainbow Connection to our Headquarters last week. Brenda and Mary came by to thank us for our contributions to the Rainbow Connection and to show us what our sponsorship made possible.

This year, Reliance One was able to grant a wish to seven-year old Aaron. Aaron loves the Ninja Turtles, playing outside, reading, and shopping at Wal-Mart. Reliance One is proud to support Aaron’s wish of going to Disneyworld in Florida. We are told that he is very excited to meet all of the Superheroes and characters at Disney!

“We are so proud of our team for putting in the efforts to make this donation possible. We have had remarkable participation in all of our events this year – from wrapping gifts at Carson’s, to change wars, and jeans days, the support from our team has been inspiring,” said Kristen Latimer, VP of Administration and the Chairwoman of R1 Impact. R1 Impact is an initiative that was created to give back to the community and to develop and grow the employees of Reliance One through community service.

Mary Grace McCarter, Executive Director at the Rainbow Connection presented Kristen Latimer, VP of Administration and Chairwoman of R1 Impact with a plaque on behalf of the Rainbow Connection celebrating the Wish that Reliance One granted.

This is the second wish that Reliance One has been able to grant with the Rainbow Connection, an organization that was created to make dreams come true for Michigan children with life threatening illnesses.

Feeding the Community One Backpack at a Time

backpack

January 22, 2016

Auburn Hills, MI – Reliance One, Inc. is proud to announce their sponsorship of  Backpack Night 2016 hosted by Shard Financial Services, Inc. and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

Backpack Night is a project taken on by the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan which makes an effort to reduce child hunger, provide education to students on proper nutrition, and encourage healthy lifestyles. The program was created to offer additional support to children who rely on free or reduced-price lunches at school. It provides a backpack full of nutritious foods every weekend throughout the school year so that no child goes hungry. The number of children that are eligible for free or reduced lunch in Michigan is staggering. In Genesee County alone, there is a 55% eligibility rate.

The program states that childhood hunger is a community problem that the community can solve. There are many ways to help. A donation in support of the program is the best way to help the cause. A $100 contribution feeds a child every weekend during the school year. You can also get involved with local community schools and help bring the program to your local district or you could volunteer your services to help fill backpacks during the school day. For more information on the program and ways to help, please visit http://www.backpacknight.com/backpack-program/.
